Notes for MARGOT KIDDER
This drawing was rendered old-school style using wooden pencils 4H to 4B which were Hand-sharpened using a matt knife. The original inspiration for this image was the famous Superman’s girlfriend Playboy centerfold Margot Kidder. This drawing was rendered the same year as the Construction Worker when my techniques we’re still evolving. This drawing was hung {1975} in the Principals office of Reynoldsburg High School in Ohio, and over the loudspeaker in my Senior year was heard, can Chuck Bowden please come to the Principal’s office. Well, being a rather conservative goody two shoe-er, this was quite a surprise to me because being called to the office was always bad. So when I arrived to the office I was asked what I have drawn in the lower right-hand corner, I replied whatever was in the photograph and they replied it looked like a nipple and I replied I had no idea what it was I just drew it and obviously it can’t be hers because of the angle. Well they had determined it looked too much like the top of a possible nipple for them to allow the art to be seen in public and so therefore it had to go off-the-wall and off the school premises. Needless to say this was my first experience with being censored. And speaking of nipples, just recently in 2013, I came across a video of Margot Kidder being interviewed on a Dick Cavett or Johnny Carson TV show in the early 1970s and she was talking about nipples, specifically that in the early years of film {1930s} when actresses used to put ice on their nipples to make them be more apparent and visible during the filming of the movie. She found this quite amusing and relative to the super conservative dark ages of film {1980s until now 2015} all nipples are banned, taped and censored from existence in all films and movies etc. Of course this nipple censorship has led to the current Free The Nipple Movement now underway supported by many famous women including, among others, Miley Cyrus aka Hannah Montana aka Angie Miller.
